Youth Leader Training 2017

These times they are a changin’

The young people in our churches are living in a world very different from the world in which we grew up. Oftentimes we feel inadequate as we try to help them navigate how to live with integrity and faith in the present age.

During the ABCNYS American Baptist Youth (ABY) Convention, we will be offering some guidance to people who care about our youth. This is for youth leaders and any other church leader who wants to better support and encourage youth in their church and community.

On Saturday, November 4, 2017, from 8:45-9:45 and then from 1:30-4:30, Emily Szelest of the
Samaritan Counseling Center will guide us in a discussion. She writes:

"Youth today are faced with unprecedented challenges: a hyper-active world, rising expectations to compete in today’s society, a breakdown of family foundations and community supports that make it difficult for youth to find stability and nurture, a media that often takes the place of family and forms one’s conscience, a decrease of direct contact in relationship with others, among many other challenges to living a whole and integrated life based upon sound moral and ethical decisions.
In the session, I would like to add to a basic understanding of unique challenges that youth today encounter, as well as how leaders can address those challenges through the cultivation of empathy and the development of moral decision-making models through loving witness and accompaniment."

Between the two sessions, you can participate in worship at 10:00 and lunch at 11:15.
